Adults nectar from a variety of prairie flowers.
Dry-mesic to xeric prairie.
Females lay their eggs at the floor of the tall grass prairie where the late season remnants of the host plants can be found. Caterpillars overwinter as first instar and begin to eat in the spring when the hostplants begin to grow.
Late May through mid-September, with a peak during July.
This species spends the Iowa winter as a first instar caterpillar after only eating its eggshell.
